Who we are

The Ulfhednar Project was founded by a Marine Combat Veteran after his personal experiences with the power of Awe saving his life. The experiences gained in the backcountry of Southern California and the Eastern Sierras opened up the opportunity for healing in a whole new way. The science behind the healing power of Awe was solidified when he attended a National Geographic expedition to the Arctic Circle.

Nick Henry, the founding member of the organization served multiple combat tours to Iraq serving in The United States Marine Corps as an Infantryman and other combat fields. He was awarded the Bronze star for his actions. Nick suffered from PTS , TBI, and other combat related injuries. In a state of severe depression Nick bought a snowboard and ventured into the mountains. The awe of being in the mountains and the physically demanding activity of climbing started to heal him.

Building upon this, Nick was selected to participate in a National Geographic/ Disneyplus expedition to the Artic Circle. On this Expedition the science behind the healing power of awe was solidified through scientific research testing cortisol levels and mental health improvements. The whole episode can be viewed on Hulu or Disneyplus “Operation Arctic Cure.”

After this expedition, The Ulfhednar Project was born. Our mission is to facilitate the experience of Awe through winter mountain sports. With the help of your donations we buy Veterans/Active-Duty Ikon passes for local resorts, ski or snowboard packages with bindings, and put on Veteran Healing Retreats in the backcountry of Southern California and Eastern Sierras. We are presently accepting donations to purchase veteran Ski/Snowboard gear, Ikon passes , logistical items for safety, and processing our Non profit applications.
